on Thursday, 02 June 2016. Posted in News

The heavyweight Zamioculcas is the Houseplant of the month for June. It’s hip, stylish and incredibly easy to look after.

The story of Zamioculcas
It's part of the Arum or Araceae family, it's evergreen and it's a relative new-comer as a house or office plant, arriving in 1996. It's thick smooth stems carry feather-like leaves and grow to 40 - 60 cm. In the wild this plant can flower with lily-like flowers that grow from the base but as an indoor plant flowering is beyond rare.

Original home
The natural habitat of Zamioculcas is rocky ground in the lowlands or at the foot of highlands in East Africa i.e. in Kenya, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Malawi and Zanzibar. Cultivation is down to ambitious Dutch growers who identified its potential as a house or office plant.
Cultivation isn't difficult. Each leaf can grow its own root when placed in the soil but it grows very slowly. Growers encourage growth with warm, humid environments to keep up with demand.

Market choice
The range of Zamioculcas is limited but they are sold in numerous pot sizes. The mini version is called Zamicro.

It is natural for stems of Zamioculcas to have black spots - this is not a sign of a problem. If the pot is cracked due to bulging tubers, it definitely needs repotting! If there are any yellow leaves this could be a sign of the plant getting too wet or being stored for too long.
